How gematria works

Gematria is an ancient system of assigning numerical values to words, making it possible to uncover hidden meanings in Jewish religious texts. It is based on the numerical value of the Hebrew letters and has been used for centuries to study and interpret the Bible.

The gematria system assigns a numerical value to each letter of the alphabet. The first nine letters correspond to 1 through 9 and then each further letter adds another 10 to their value - so the tenth letter is 10, while the twentieth letter is 200. By adding up these numeric values, words can be assigned numeric values as well.

For instance, a standard three-letter word like אָדָם (Adam) has a value of 42 (1 + 4 + 37). Comparing different words that have similar numerical values can give insight into their deeper meaning, since those words may have some kind of hidden connection between them. Beyond that, there are many other types of gematria calculations with different sets of rules which can be used to uncover secrets from Jewish texts.

The main focus of gematria is usually on understanding spiritual truths and looking for hints about things related to faith or philosophy. Jewish tradition views numbers as being reflective of natural order in the universe, so by using gematria it's believed one can get closer to understanding these patterns as they relate to G-d and His relationship with mankind.
